Beijing is the center of China's travel. Here are the imperial palaces, magnificent gardens and sacrificial altars of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Northwest of the city are the Great Wall and the Ming Tombs. Southeast of Beijing, visitors may climb Mount Taishan, pay homage to the Temple of Confucius, visit Taihu Lake, West Lake and Mount Huangshan; enjoy the world-famous Suzhou gardens and wander through Shanghai's bustling streets and markets. Up north, visitors may ride horseback on the Mongolian prairie, go hunting in the Greater Hinggan Mountains, admire the ice lanterns or go skating and skiing in Harbin. A trip to the northwest leads to Xi'an, where the terracotta warriors of the First Emperor of Qin Have been standing guard for more than 2,000 years. Continuing west, visitors are treated to more wonders--the treasure of Chinese mural art in Mogao Grottoes at Dunhuang, Gansu Province. Following the ancient "Silk Road" leads to Xinjiang. From Xi'an to the southwest, it is best to go first to Yunnan, and experience a variety of local customs of the ethnic groups living there. Back to Sichuan, you may visit Mount Ermei, Jiuzhaigou and the Dujiang Weir, and take the Three-Gorges cruise along the Yangtze River from Chongqing to Wuhan, a metropolis in central China. From Wuhan, visitors may return to Beijing to continue south for a visit to Mount Lushan, Mount Wuyishan and the natural landscapes along the Li River in Guilin before leaving the country at Guangzhou or Hongkong.
